The Flogging of Jesus

John 18:39- but it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release `the king of the Jews'?"

King of Jews- He's not the king of the Jews, He's slapping them in the face.

The same thing Jesus was being accused of Barnabbas did.

JN 19:1 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. [2] The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe [3] and went up to him again and again, saying, "Hail, king of the Jews!" And they struck him in the face.

Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.

This is your Messiah people, this is not VBS, or bible study, this is the Messiah that is in love with you.

MT 27:27 Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. [28] They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, [29] and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand and knelt in front of him and mocked him. "Hail, king of the Jews!" they said. [30] They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again. [31] After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.

Flogging- basically they tied his hands and tied him against a pole. And his buttocks were shown to the audience. He is completely and totally naked. They have the whip of the 'cat of nine tails'. It has bones and steel balls in it. The bones are put in so that, when he is whipped the bones will stay in his body. And they will rip it back and rip his skin apart. He's been awake for over 24 hours. And now he's standing there, as the steel balls hit him and start hammering away at his bones. And as they rip it back there is blood and skin flying all over his body. His bones start sticking out of his chest and his back. As they continue to hit him… 1, 2, 3,… 35, 36, 37, 38, 39 times. Each time they hit Him and bring it back the bones from the whip continue to rip His skin apart. After all this, they play "hail to the king", the sit him up on a place and they give him a staff and a course robe. And now your Savior is sitting there with His skin ripped apart, and he's bleeding, he's in agony, he's living a nightmare. Now they put a crown of thorns on His head. (NOT A HAT, THORNS!). They SMASH this into His head, so now he has blood flowing down his face. If He was lucky enough, as He was being flogged and whipped, the one thing he would try to do is hide His face. Because every time the whip hits you, you want to make sure it doesn't hit your face or you will die. The metal balls would smash the bones of your face. The bones from the whip would stick in your head, catch your eyes and rip you back. If this happens you'll DIE. So after all this, he just might be a little beat up and tired. So they drop Jesus Christ on the ground and this place is commonly used to beat people. There's mosquitoes, flies, and your flesh is ripped open. An the bugs are all over your Savior, he's bloody, and he's got no body, he can't see anything, the blood is now drying and sticking to His face. So now they sit Him on a stool, and put a staff in his hand, and blindfold him. They take the staff out of his hand and hit him in the head with it. Every time they smash His head they scream, "HAIL KING OF THE JEWS, HAIL TO THE KING." And they will beat and mock Him, he's got to be half in and half out. The pain is excruciating, the sweat is running down his head, mixed with the blood. While it's running into his open wounds, and burning them, while they are still being eaten by the bugs. Now in Jerusalem, it's starting to get hot and he's sitting there and the flies are buzzing and he can smell the rotten flesh of other people. THIS IS THE KING OF KINGS.

JN 19:4 Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews, "Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him."

HE HAS NO CHARGE AGAINST HIM

Pilate believes that if he brings out this ripped apart, shredded, beaten man, then the people will have mercy on him. In another part of the text, it says that they have taken His robe off, they would pound Him some more. The robe was made of wool and this was a HOT day. If the cuts had begun to heal at all, when they ripped the robe off, they were all ripped open.

Now Pilate brings Jesus before the people. Now do you understand why I'm in love with my SAVIOR so much?, are you starting to understand why I want to be Passionate about HIM?? Hasn't he been Passionate about us??? What do you want from Him???

I'm not asking you to join FCA or even do Bible study, I'm asking you to accept this guy, he's is God and he took it. Does it make sense now??? Because if you want more this is a JOKE compared to when they crucified Him. I'm not begging you to follow him. I'm presenting Him!!! I DON'T BEG PEOPLE TO GET SERIOS ABOUT JESUS!!! I WILL NOT!!! ISN'T THIS ENOUGH! Do we have to try and convince you to walk with the LORD YOUR GOD?! God's love for us is nuts! Can you imagine putting your son up there, and allowing people to mock him, and rip his muscles and skin apart??? Can you imagine how God feels when we come to church when we FEEL LIKE IT? Can you imagine what God is saying to himself when we refuse to admit that Jesus Christ is our Lord? After what he has done for us. I'm not insane, I read my Bible.

Jesus Christ is not some stupid Bible study. He's someone that had his skin ripped apart for You! Can you imagine what it feels like with bugs all over you, naked before a crowd of people. Imagine the shame! Can you imagine in your manhood that you have to drop to your knees in front of this crowd, NAKED!

What is wrong with these people.?

[5] When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, "Here is the man!"

He brought him out like this because he did not want to kill him. He thought that the people would say, "O my God, enough, enough" and then turn away and walk back to their homes. What is wrong with these people? Their response is

JN 19:6 As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, "Crucify! Crucify!" But Pilate answered, "You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him."

CRUCIFY, CRUCIFY! THEY YELLED!

There's nothing left of Him, I don't understand his grace and his mercy, cause if this is my son I would kill them all. But that's me and not God.

What has Jesus done wrong? NOTHING. He said he was God, he healed lepers, raised people from the dead, and loved people. Don't let people set you on the fact that Jesus never claimed to be God. The reason they did this was because he claimed to be God.

Finally, Pilate looked up at this beaten swollen man and said this is your king. What is wrong with these people? Better yet, what is wrong with us?

They shouted, "take him away, take him away" "crucify him!". Christ is just sitting up there if he can even sit. In this situation there would be part of his intestines visible. His head is like a watermelon, and is all out of shape. Blood is everywhere, all over his body. And the people are saying, "take him away, crucify him!!!.

Pilate in MT washes his hands of the whole thing. He will chose man over God, the Jews have already rejected God, and Pilate washed his hands. WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH JESUS TODAY? Are you going to be Pilate, are you not going to stand up to your King because of man? Are you going to make him Lord today.

Hasn't he done his part for you? Hasn't he suffered enough? And if not, then what more does he have to do? Will you make him your king. Cause I pray for you if you just walk away and don't care.
